  • Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in North Yorkshire.
  • It has a maritime, mineral and tourist economy.
  • Whitby was where Captain Cook learned his trade as a seaman.
  • Captain's Cook first vessel HMS Endeavor was built in Whitby.
  • Bram Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and it is believed that the town and it's surrounding areas inspired him to create the setting for Dracula.
  • Whitby is a charming fishing village surrounded by the spectacular back drop of the North Yorkshire Moors.
  • A short distance away from Whitby is the the village of Goathland where the long running TV series Heartbeat was filmed.
  • Scarborough is claimed to be founded by the Danes in the 10th century.
  • The town is located on the North Sea coast line.
  • Historically, in the North Riding of Yorkshire,  Scarborough lies between 10 and 230 feet above sea level.
  • Residents of the town are known as "Scarborians"
  • The town is seeped in social history and is a popular tourist destination 
  • Scarborough Castle from 1640 changed hands seven times between the Royalists and Parliamentarians during the English Civil War.
  • In 1622 Mrs Thomasin Farrer discovered a stream of acidic water running from one of the cliffs to the south of the town.
  • This gave birth to Scarborough Spa and Britain's first seaside resort.
  • Scarborough at the time proved a popular getaway for the wealthy of London.
  • The Scarborough - York Railway opened in 1845 which increased tourism in abundance.
  • Bass - Burton Brewery, at the time,  payed for 15 trains  a year to send eight thousand brewery employees on their annual trip to the seaside
  • York is a cathedral city in North Yorkshire.
  • The city has Roman origins and has many historic buildings and structures.
  • York Minster and York Castle are very popular with tourists.
  • The city walls make a great back drop to this beautiful city
  • York is home to the National Railway Museum.
  • The River Ouse and Foss flow through the city.
  • Music and the Arts are well represented in York, with great venues.
  • Whitby ,Scarborough and York are well worth visiting when you are in North Yorkshire.
