Lochranza lays to the North of Arran.
- Early Norwegian Vikings named the Loch of Arran "Ranza" thus Lochranza.
- Lochranza is a beautiful village with the bay and the mountains standing the test of time, with it's raw beauty.
- It's Ancient Castle, dating back to 1262, stands on the green peninsula which stretches halfway across the loch forming a inner harbour.
- Picturesque cottages spread along the shore on both sides of the Loch.
- In the last century Lochranza was one of the main fishing centre's on the West Coast of Scotland.
- Lochranza is a very popular destination for camping and hiking.
- One of Arran's main whisky distilleries is located in Lochranza.
- Wild Deer can be spotted, mainly in the early evening, around Lochranza golf course.
- Catacol is two miles South of Lochranza on the Northwestern corner of Arran.
- It's place name originates from Old Norse, meaning " The Gully of the Cat."
- Wildcats were once believed to be native to the area.
- The village lies near the mouth of Abhainn Mor, a river flowing down from the heights of Glen Catacol.
- Between the village and the bay is a stretch of beautiful sandy beach that makes Catacol a magnet for visitors.
- The most famous landmark in Catacol is a row of terraced 19th century cottages known as "The Twelve Apostles"
- The Twelve Apostles were built in the 1860"s
- Fisherman and there families used to live in these houses.
-
Each house had a different shaped first floor window.
- Candlelight was used at night through the different shape windows to signal to the fisherman out at sea.
- Pirnmill is a small village 4.6 miles south of Catacol on the North West Coast of Arran.
- The name of the village was inspired by the old mill which manufactured wooden pirns(bobbins) between 1780 and 1840.
- The stretch of beach between Pirmill and Imachar is a favourite resting place in the early evening for seal colonies.
- I do hope you like my work.
